Who Are We Really?
I will come straight out with it! We are a promising experiment of Mother Nature. As a species, we are egotistical and self-obsessed. For instance, in all our religions we place ourselves just under God. Every other living organism on planet Earth barely rates a mention. But just try living without them. They all deserve our respect but until recently, have received very little. As a species, our calling is to evolve!
We as a species are brand new. We have only been living a civilized life for 10,000 years. And in that short time, we have learned how to create artificial intelligence, explore other planets, and blow ourselves up. How amazing is that! But Mother Nature has not kept up. We still have the mind and body designed for a life of scarcity. We are still quite primeval. I'll give you an example. My life would be better if I woke up early each morning and exercised for an hour. Do I do it? No! Why? Because my mind and body were designed differently. I was designed to conserve energy because I will need it later to capture food.
Every person on the planet is designed the same way. This includes our leaders. The people whom we trust to know better. Yes, they may have done better in academia or politics. But Mother Nature created them just like us. And they, too, are only 10,000 years old. So if you think they are not shaped by the scarcity mentality necessary in primeval times, you are fooling yourself. Decision-making with such a mentality is totally inadequate for the world we presently live in.
You only have to look at the Doomsday Clock and see that it is 89 seconds to midnight. If we had good leaders, the clock would not even exist!!! The reason our species is so successful is that we can create things. Other species need to work with what exists. So the only thing limiting us is fighting over the things we have already created, instead of creating faster, so that everyone is satisfied. But satisfaction is more psychological than physical. So we will never be satisfied because we just think it's the other way around. Satisfaction is a physiological thing, not a physical thing. For such a smart species, why can't we get that right?
This scarcity mentality creates our class system within all of our societies. We have tried to have classless societies, but the more complex the society, the more class shows up. Even the Plymouth Brethren around the Northern Districts of Sydney have a class society. Look at the size of the houses of the elders compared to the normal brethren. The elders can justify those large properties they live in any way they like, but those properties afford luxury and status. And the Plymouth Brethren try to avoid classism in their religion and beliefs to an extreme level. Yet still they fail.
Now expand that to an entire country or planet. Forget about which system of Government they profess to have. They all have classism. A society is made up of various types of people. Some are creative and can commercialize that creativity. Some are academically and politically astute and pretend to be creative. They are CEOs rather than entrepreneurs. Any creative ideas they have are minimal or suppressed because it's too risky. They become caretakers of your invested money rather than creators of new wealth. If anything, they suppress outside creativity because it is easier to deal with the predictable status quo. Their shareholders will think they are in control. Look at the documentary, "Who Killed the Electric Car". Look at those Legacy car manufacturers now. They are begging their Governments for help to catch up. They had their chance, and they turned their backs on the opportunity.
What about in the so-called communist system, where everyone supposedly gets"a share of the action". Don't be fooled. Class still exists, it's just purely about power. That's the interpretation of classism in the East. In the West, it's money and power. The destination is the same. Power!!! Power to control people and resources. That's all that matters. And that all comes back to the scarcity mentality. The idea that there is only so much in the world and you have to get your fill before it all runs out. That is the way everyone who matters thinks. But Mother Nature programmed us. We are only 10,000 years old. We are still a baby in evolutionary terms. But here is the thing, Carl Jung would say that the only thing we can't get enough of is love. Everything else we can create. Love we can't create.... we have to earn it. How weird is that! We thought stuff was more important. That's probably why we created God. He loves us no matter how imperfect we think we are. We need God.
But what if we don't find God, or some purpose, or someone special? What if we don't think we are special? What if we think we aren't achieving anything worthwhile in life? Will we get depressed? Will we start saying to ourselves Nobody likes me. I am not likable. If I died, no one would miss me. I am worthless. Vulnerable young people are especially susceptible to this line of thinking. It leads to depression and eventually suicidal thoughts. Such people would be better off believing in God, even if He isn't real.
If you compared the proportion of depressed people in nomadic hunter-gatherer societies to modern civilized societies, I'll bet you'll find, in our advanced societies, we live in a much more mentally toxic environment. And we haven't altered our society to cushion against that potentially hazardous fact of modern living. There must be ways to do it in an all-encompassing way. We just use bandage solutions and drug people so they can't hear themselves think those destructive thoughts. We even have women buying $3,000 handbags, which were made in China for $600 because it makes them feel important somehow.
